Environmental concerns are changing how we work. The Pandemic has shown that changes are possible and now it is time to develop this further.
The development of online consultancy will see few limits in providing services efficiently. Contracts will move from paper to digital, but not the persons dealing. Human beings still need to meet. By making routine meetings digital, the lesser but still important physical meetings will not only be more efficient but also more enjoyable.

Many are now experienced in working on distance and know how to use videoconferences and online tools. The change in how we will work continues. Lots of the services can be provided online. Reduced environmental footprint is only one advantage of minimizing traveling. Reduced cost is another.

Easy access to experts whenever needed. No long-term employment, just assign the experts online when the questions arise. No "idling" or “invented” doings to keep people occupied when they are not needed.

The experts online are no robots, no AI dummies, they are human beings and understand your thoughts and ideas and they are ready to discuss and answer your questions.

Training is also a field that can be arranged online – we still want to meet eye to eye sometime, but lots of up-to-date training and meetings can as well be done online.

To meet is not removed from the agenda, only reduced. A change will always bring new things, some liked, some disliked. When we realize that a change is a must, our curiosity and our creativity will make sure we find new and better values through the change,. don’t fight the future, you will lose.

Contract Management and other management services online are just a small step into the future. Take it on now and keep yourself in control instead of being forced into something you cannot control or understand.

Our book, "A Guide to Read and understand contracts" provides a lot of help in knowing your contract.
It is available on Amazon Kindle as an eBook and as a Paperback. ("Contract Management") .
Make the Guide available for your contract managers to add lots of experience from how and what to discuss both with your consultant and the other party. Contract Management: Guide to read and understand Contracts eBook: MATTSSON, LEIF: Kindle Store

After Covid

After Covid

Lockdown and then?
Less office – more online

I am not sure the world economy will see such dramatic change as many expect due to Covid 19. But Covid 19 will sure be the TRIGGER for a long period of big changes in business life.

Environmental concerns together with the Covid 19 experience will start a rethinking of old truths regarding production and distribution of products. And thereby how we do business. It may not be as obvious that it is cheaper to produce in China than in Europe if applying new risk models for “just in time” and “comparative advantages”. Even without Corona a change of economy, change of work life, employment models etc have for some years been waiting behind the corner to take advantage of the new IT environment (5G is one) and combine it with a new and still developing approach to work, where to work and how to be paid for it.  .

Will the world economy collapse?

Do we need to see a dramatic change in living standard? No, I don’t think so, neither due to Corona, nor due to environmental concerns. Yes, we will see changes but rather of how to measure living standard than how to experience it.  But if the world economy will collapse? It will not, it will change and as all changes it will temporarily cause problems but also ignite new thinking – and this is exactly what is needed to adapt to the time we are in already.  This is why I see the present pandemic as a TRIGGER for a change, not the driver for a change.

Changes will come – 2020 Contract Management goes online!

2020 is the year we will realize that Contrat Management will move online.  80-90% of the work can be done online, little travel but the whole worlds expertise available at your PC/Smartphone.
All tools are there, for instance blockchain technic, to make the whole process from offer to fulfillment of Contracts online. But don’t forget, human meetings cannot be totally replaced by faces or words on monitors. We need to meet face to face to understand the phsycology of business. Most of the Contract Management however, don’t require physical meetings more than occationally. “Hybrid solutions” can do it. Advice online to persons meeting physically.

And the Stock Markets, up or down?

Today’s Stock Market is not only driven by fundamentals, it is a AI (or as I have called it in an earlier post, AS) controlled play where the overall moves in the day trading is rather a function of the big “Market Makers” co-operative and controlled efforts rather than the underlying values. If trading or even investing in the stock market can produce a higher revenue than other investments, the general move will be up. This is valid as long as we have no other view on what is profitable than the revenue measured in money. Environmental concerns will perhaps help finding changes to this.
An important question is whether the world economy will go down, up or being stable.  Not easy to find an answer to that because it depends on how we define it. And as we are entering a new era(?), old definitions may not be relevant any more. If for instance all countries in the world will support their businesses with new printed money, will this make the economy to go up or down? How about inflation? If USA print USD to a value of 10% of its GNP to support the society and all other countries do the same, this must in reality mean that the balance between the countries economic systems will remain the same and thereby a Dollar have the same relation to a Euro as before. And there is no absolute price on anything so what?

It would be very exciting to hear our economic scientists discuss this very simplified view of the world economy after Covid 19 and into the next decades.

Lockdown and then?

[/mk_fancy_title][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1586525509672{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]

We are now witnessing a world in lockdown, business closed and a stock market all around the worls runned by algoritms instead of fundamentals. Artificiel Intelligence (AI) or Artificial Stupidity (AS) ?

The world, and particularly the business will not be the same after Covid 19 as before. Combined with growing environmental concerns we will see at least the start of something new. “Comparative advantage”, “Just in time” and a lot of other new or old truths will be applied differently (or not at all), “Local production and supply” will take over again and imagine what impact this will have. Just think of a change where components are not manufactured in China but in USA and Europe.

[/vc_column_text][mk_fancy_title font_family=”none”]

What has this to do with “online” services?

[/mk_fancy_title][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1586525444633{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]

A lot, both manufacturing and services will benefit from international networks, 5G is triggering a revolution and will have a huge place in the “rebuilding” of world economy. With that in mind and a further comment of the Stock Markets, the Algoritms don’t understand the future of Ericsson, Nokia, Huawei and all other tele- and datacom companies, they will all be the most important facilitators for the “new” world economy.

Changes are inevitable and whatever we want a change or not we have to prepare for it and adapt to it. A question all CEO:s, the board of directors and everybody involved in a kind of business shall ask themselves is; Are we prepared for the paradigm shift which will come tomorrow? Sounds dramatic, but a paradigm shift is already coming and is visible for the ones who don’t stick the heads in the sand and don’t want to see it. This  “Tomorrow” is not in the next 100 years or so, it is literally the day after you read this, maybe not dramatic but the change is here and it will not stop. You can see it in politics as well as in business, the yellow west movement in Paris is perhaps the most obvious right now and cannot be overlooked as “just a political issue in France ” It is an obvious sign of that something is going on, something is bubbling under the surface which is a start of something new. It may calm down within some short time and by promises from president Macron, but the underlying force will not be silenced, it will continue to grow and reach many areas including business.

Does this have to do with management?

Yes of course, as the whole society will change dramatically in the coming decade. Information is now available everywhere in real time and from the whole world and you can get it in your smartphone wherever you are. But it is worth considering that the all-time availability via smartphones is more and more questioned which means that we may see a change of direction in peoples approach to internet and communication.
This does not mean a step backward, rather further steps forward when users get more sophisticated and balanced in using all available information and communication resources. It may well be an indication of that questioning is being the normal behavior
instead of accepting. Be sure this will affect management. Can anyone imagine a situation where some employees express their views and question the present management, “sure Jeff, you have been very successful until now, but we don’t see how your management, the present policies, and strategies will continue to be successful over the next years, time for a change, isn’t it?”
I don’t know if the time is over for the “strong leader” but I think at least that “strong leader” shall be redefined to a “creative and open-minded coach”.
Such reflections are just the start of a discussion leading to the paradigm shift which we can already feel the vibration of and we will very soon experience also the power of it. This has a potential to change more than management and to do it in a very short time. A Google search on”paradigm shift” gives thousands of hits, youtube, e-books, presentations, illustrations – but why is not visible in real business? What we may see now is a change of the shade of the color
rather than the change of the actual management (and politics). One of the known “leaders” who address this, at least to some extent, is Richard Branson. Many more have to change course into the same direction as he has done.
More about the real shift of paradigm in work and business and why in a coming blog post.

After many years in business, most of them as a consultant, ranging from Architecture, Construction Management, Contract Management, Risk Management to many other areas  of Management, the latest 15 years in telecom, I want to share my experiences and my thoughts of business, management and other subjects gained from years of national and international work as an expert (and teacher) in the wast field of management, contract management, project management, risk management, claims management, troubleshooting, and other areas. As this is a “Blog page” it may pop up comments and thoughts about food, about golf and other things making the life pleasant and also about politics and happenings which perhaps make life less pleasant.

The professional part – management – can always, and shall always be, discussed and questioned. I welcome and encourage all to comment, to criticize, propose and be creative with new ideas and thoughts. Looking forward, we don’t know the speed of change, but we know change is an essential and unavoidable part of life as well as of management. Does, for instance, our managers (and politicians) understand what the information technology has brought and still will bring about? They can use Twitter and Facebook but do they really understand the power of it?

For instance, how many of you believe the 19th-century authoritative management will survive in the future? No one I hope, as it represents a time, very different from the present, with human beings having to offer their physical power and skills in working for the few, believing their brain power made them superior.
This will of course not survive and we will very soon experience a gigantic shift in the attitude to work, employment, remuneration and all things seen as the norm today. Very few are lifting their eyes to really see what is going on. This is why we still remain in the society of Adam Smith and his followers. Old economic science may still be relevant as it is based on human thinking, but we shall be very happy that very few elements in this area are static. Human beings, at least a few of them, want to develop, want to look at something ahead of what is prevailing and these creative and brave minds are the ones taking us into the future.

In the training of managers, I often ask the question; how do you think about your work and what is most important?
“Try your best to never do anything wrong” or “Try your best to do things right”
Consider this a while before you read my view.
If you follow the first, how to do?  The easiest way is to use all experience from the past and follow the manuals. I.e. do only what you and the generations before you know is right and nothing will go wrong, the manual is your leading star and nobody can blame you for anything. Safe, secure and no risk?

If you follow the second, how to do?  By using your experience? Yes. By using the manuals? Yes. But what’s more – You must use your creativity, to look around and see the world around you now, what can be expected, what is changing, what possibilities is or can be available, what may the future bring about, what can be done better, what will benefit mankind now and tomorrow!

Think out of the box!
We should not have computers or internet today, not even the wheel, if nobody had been brave enough to go outside the “manuals”, used their creativity and taken risks in trying to see around the corner!

What has “management” to do with this?

Take a quick look at project management, risk management, contract management, and other management ideas, you will see that the focus is on tools methods and preservation and too little on creativity, thinking out of the box, risk taking etc. I mean that the tools and methods may be maximum 30% of management, creative thinking and looking ahead is 70%. And the solid base for all this is your own personality and your way of approaching matters! Many years ago, I recommended a book by Briner, Geddes, and Hasting about “Successful Project Management” to students in project management as it was moving focus from tools to a creative process, at least as I read the book.

Your management and my management may be different, but we both learn from each other as long as we don’t fall into the trap and try to adapt to something which is not supported by our own personality. Anyone more than me who think that there is only one “Quest (means business)” and others trying to imitate are only boring?
